Remember the day, remember the sorrow

12th may is a day that all the Chinese will never forget.
2008 is a year that faced a lot of difficulties. At the beginning of the year, a snow disaster took place in the southern part of China. It was the first time for many people from the south to see snow, but it snowed too heavily and became a disaster. In March, the Tibet riot happened and a lot of innocent people suffered. All Chinese people were in sorrow, but when the big earthquake shocked the whole country, people began to know that all we suffered before were just the tip of the iceberg.
I still remember the day the earthquake happened. We were about to have an English lesson and our English teacher was walking in our classroom waiting for the bell to ring. At a time, I felt the student behind me shaking the desk and my head giddy. Suddenly a classmate of mine shouted that it was an earthquake. Everyone started to run downstairs. While we were rushing downstairs, the building kept shaking slightly but can be felt. About five minutes later, all the students in our school gathered together on the playground. What came next is a whole worrying afternoon without any information about the suddenly shaking. What was more, maybe because of the earthquake there was something wrong with the wireless connection of the mobile phones, so we cannot get in touch with our family members working in the other side of this city and the seniors at home. It made the afternoon seemed so long and would never end, but we were already the fortunate ones thousands of miles away from the disaster area.
In the evening, when we got back home, we got the information from the TV and the Internet. It was in Wenchuan, Sichuan province that an earthquake of 8 scales happened. A lot of buildings were destroyed and a lot of people died. Well, what happened next did touch everyone not only from China, but also from the whole world.
The army reached the disaster area in the shortest time and started to rescue people as soon as the arrived there. Even our premier Hu Jintao went to the center part of the disaster area first time and gave the victims a lot of comfort. It was the first time for me to see a lead of a country sitting with the most ordinary people and telling them not to worry about the rest life. It was also the first time for me to see a lead of a country carrying a crying baby in his arms and telling her that she would get the things to eat soon. I could not hold back my tears any more. I cried because of sorrow and sensation at the same time.
Time flies. One year has passed since the disaster happened. During the last year, everyone from China tried their best to help the victims as much as possible and the victims have also tried their best to rebuild their home. China will never forget the day. China will never forget the sorrow.

  1. It was indeed a tragedy, Yang Xiao. This year, as I read about the families of the victims, and how they returned to the earthquake sites to remember their loved ones, I too felt their sorrow. For the parents, nothing can bring back their children, and for the children, they will have to make do without their parent/s. Time will seem to stand still for them even as the rest of the world is going on at full speed . . .
