An Unforgettable Evening

Last Saturday, the meals-at-home activity which has been expected for quite a long time eventually began. All of us enjoyed the first meeting with the enthusiastic families, and really appreciate the hospitality of the local families.
Around 4:50pm, the bus came prompt to Eton Hall to pick us up. However, it seemed that the bus driver did not even know what the destination, which really amazed us. After a series of discussions, finally he got the rough idea of where to drive. However, it was obvious that the driver was not familiar with the path nearby. He always took the path with long distance instead of the short one, so that we spent much time on the road. After we arrived at the destination, we were taken into an underground activity hall where all the voluntary families were waiting. They are almost all mid-aged couples who look friendly and politely. After a brief introduction of the activity and the families, we began to play games. The first one is to find the person who agrees with a certain quality and write down his name. The first one to find out all the relative persons is the winner. Through this game, we got the chance to know each other primarily. The second game is to find certain number of people to embrace together in order to make up the right price, which is based on the rule that a boy is worth 5 cent while a girl is worth 10 cent. Though we are very familiar with this traditional game, we all took an active part in the firm game and really enjoyed ourselves. I felt much more relaxed and comfortable after these funny games.
Then we came to the most expected part of that evening, the delicious meal. Although the varieties of dishes are not as many as expected, the taste is definitely satisfying. We were divided into small groups, and each group sits with their host family. During the meal, we communicated with the local Singaporeans freely. We talked about our life in China while they shared their local traditions and customs. Through the communication, we had a better understanding of each other. And we also made an appointment with the host family. Next time, we are invited to visit their home, so I really look forward to experiencing the normal life of Singaporeans. At last, the activity ends up with several popular songs. When we came to the last song “Friends”, everyone turn to the peak of excitement holding hands with the persons besides him. In that evening, we were really touched by the hospitality and the consideration of the Singaporeans. They gave us the warm feeling of home, and try their best to help us adapt to the new environment as soon as possible. Around 8:30 we returned Eton Hall. I really felt guilty since I had eaten so much food. at any rate, it is a good evening.

  1. Sounds like you all had a good time, Bowen. It's good that you got a chance to meet people outside of your tutors and classmates.
