Opinions on the value of bridging course.

This morning I got the news from Ms.Lim that somebody has written a journal or rather complaining letter doubting the value of this bridging course. His main idea was like "we are having fun for 6 hours every day and actually not learning english" or that sort of things.I am just shocked. It just doesn't make any sense! I think the moe is really thoughtful and caring to set a bridging course for us.(it's true.I'm not flattering!) The bridging course is more than useful!
Here in bridging course, I can really feel that we are trying to pick up the language rather than learning English as a subject which is common in china. In china, even in colledge,we learn English to pass the exams.most of the time,we focus on how to pass the band4 and band6 English test with high score, so we can get a good job deviating the previous aim of learning English, grasp a new communication tool!why must the complainer think we have to focus on the exam focus learning style! I can't help wondering.
He said we were wasting time every day, which is another myth! In bridging course, apart from learning English,we can also try to adjust to the new environment and get prepared for the coming life in nus which can be really tensive! We can do a lot of reading and explore this strange country.anyway, the bridging course can be really fun and fruitful! How could it be meaningless!
Maybe this is just my personal opinion, but I just consider bridging course a important and enjoyable session which should be treasured by all means .

  1. Thanks Qiao Liang, for sharing your views with us. I'm really glad to know that you are enjoying your classes everyday, and that you find the course very meaningful =>

Just to clarify, the student wasn't really 'complaining', so to say, hahaha. Like you, he wanted to share his opinion with me, and I welcome that. He felt rather confused because very apparently, the method of learning is quite different in Singapore as compared to China. After so many years of rote learning, of practicing grammar rules and structures, and remembering vocabs, the adjustment process is a huge one, no doubt. Something good came out of that discussion, for that student is now more appreciative of the whole bridging process. I am very happy because the student trusted me enough to share his opinion with me, and in the process allowed me to clarify, and address his concerns. In turn, I shared his experience with your class so that all of you can learn something from it =>>

In my opinion ,bridging course is more than meaningful, citing a famous sentence:Attitude is everything! So the choice whether you make the most of you life is on you,not anyone else.I feel frustrated at the begainning of course due to something unhappy, but now i understand something and try to make full use of my everyday!i just want to say It is not until you realize the meaning you can work on!come on!

  3. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Qiao Liang. I'm glad to know that you've been enjoying the bridging course, and finding it useful. That's very encouraging to us teachers. And as Ms Lim pointed out, it's also good that the student had a chance to voice out his confusion, and equally good that someone like Ms Lim was on hand to help him to deal with it. So if there's anything that's confusing any of you, it's good to talk to one of the teachers about it. Then we can see if we can find a solution.
