The movie begins with the scene a Mexican girl being beaten by a bunch of Negro boys. The unconcealed fear in her eyes melts into the deep-rooted hatred between different colors. The fact her father was put into jail merely because the white cops didn’t like him in turn pushed her to extreme.
Years after, that girl reached age for high school. In her school, different races never talk to each other. Whenever they meet in school, they would stare resentfully at each other as if they are enemies. The only interaction is through ruthless fighting, sometimes even guns are used. In the classroom, the situation is not much different.
Then, a young lady was hired to teach English to the mixed class of freshman students. She had no experience but passion for her students. Being optimistic for her future job, she had no idea how difficult her task was going to be. On the first day of class, she arrived early, dressed in her favorite suit, waiting to launch a nice start. To her shock, the students came late, talked loudly in the room, and most unbearable, they showed no respect to her at all. They even humiliated her because she is white. The girl mentioned in the beginning said she hated all white people and cursed her with the most sullen words.
The poor teacher cried alone after class, but decided not to give up so easily. The next day, she greeted her class with another bright smile. But no matter how well she treated them, their prejudice seemed unable to be removed. She tried to help her students out of trouble, but they perceived it as interference of their own business.
Then one day, she gave everyone a diary book, asking them to write down whatever stuck in their minds. It opened the gate of communication between students and the teacher. Magically, students began to feel less hostile to each other. In fact, they changed so much that the delighted teacher decided to hold a party. In the party, she asked them to say goodbye to their past and treat each other as equal. Students in the class, no matter white, yellow, black or yellow, all shook hands and hugged.
But the story doesn’t end here. She had devoted so much time and effort to her job, that one day her husband decided that he couldn’t stand not seeing his wife for long. He offered her a choice, the students or him. Driven by her sense of responsibility and attachment to her students, she painfully divorced her beloved husband. To make things worse, the school heads felt their position had been shaken by the new-coming teacher and tried to work against her.
However, a strong mind can only become stronger after suffering so much pains, she stood it and encouraged her students to write down their voice. The writings were gathered and published with the title “Freedom Writers”.
The heroine of this movie is only an ordinary woman, teacher and wife. She does what she truly loves and treated all her students like her own child. She is not just teaching a class, she is teaching the whole world. Any thought of racial discrimination would pale next to her. After decades, her lessons might be forgotten, but she will be remembered as a person, for she mad the miracle happen in a desperate world.

The moral I learned from your story is the "importance of communication." It is always important to communicate sincerely, even with someone who dislikes you.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed the movie Yiping. I thought it was amazing too.
